[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

I had a dream last night that I desperately needed to listen to the Wipers, and so while doing the old listen/read tonight I stumbled across this unexpected and totally-ripping Hole cover of the classic and heroically awesome Wipers song “Over the Edge”. Seriously, it’s great. Erlandson’s guitar rips, Courtney yips, and I smiled.

After downloading, I was also reminded that I had live Hole covers of the Nirvana songs “Pennyroyal Tea,” “You Know You’re Right” and “Old Age” hanging out on my laptop. The latter two came from an unreleased Hole recording of MTV Unplugged and were unreleased as Nirvana songs until the mid 00s. All of which are also actually decent, and the “You Know You’re Right” is possibly better than the mediocre Nirvana version (which can’t be said for the atrocious cover of “Hungry Like the Wolf” also on the Unplugged session).

OCCUPYIN’ AIN’T NO PICNIC

Dear friends visiting / Occupying Wall Street these days,

I think that it might a good time to revisit or discover for the first time all the classic records by the Minutemen, including Double Nickles on The Dime and my favorite track, “This Ain’t No Picnic” (video included here). One of the best and most earnest and sensible political rock groups of all time.

Sincerely,

Jeffrey

LISTEN: CHOKING VICTIM, “INFESTED”, FROM GIVE ‘EM THE BOOT COMP

Discovered this classic adolescent comp tonight in an old CD book which I’d apparently neglected to throw out. It soundtracked a car ride dropping my friends off in Prospect Heights. Fuck fuck fuck YES. 1997 came flooding back like it was yesterday

RADICAL WFH SUMMER

I can’t and won’t attempt to state that this song does not sound dated and mild-cringeworthy (as it did, honestly, when it came out in 1995), but right now I am enjoying blasting it loud while I work from home and drink a frosty can of Genny Light.

EX/CURRENT/FUTURE LION DESTROYERS

DOWNLOAD: WIRE, “EX-LION TAMER”, from Pink Flag

Benjamin: So… i really cant do Destroyer his voice is just a nonstarter
Jayson: haha that’s your verdict?
Benjamin: i tried that record you recommended last month, kaputt Benjamin: hearing his voice makes me unable to take him or his music seriously. it’s just weird and corny and forced sounding and makes me feel like he’s laughing at me
Jayson: that’s a funny observation! (he might be)
Benjamin: no more

Benjamin: on the other hand i’m listening to a Wire record from 2008
Jayson: which one is that?
Benjamin: and am stunned at how mostly rad it is Object 47
Benjamin: so impressively good for a 30 year old band
Jayson: I love that I love artists that are able to do good work late into their lives. nothing is as invigorating to me as hearing a 47-year old dude who sounds as amped and inspired making music as the 20-something version of himself

Benjamin: this is fucking hilarious: ‘In 1985, the group reformed as a “beat combo” (a joking reference to early 1960s beat music or even possibly beatniks), with greater use of electronic musical instruments. Wire announced that they would perform none of their older material, hiring The Ex-Lion Tamers, (a Wire cover band named after a song title from Pink Flag), as their opening act. The Ex-Lion Tamers played Wire’s older material; Wire played their new material.’
Benjamin: hahahaahah how fucking dadaist is that
Jayson: hahah! dude, also: the drummer for Ex Lion Tamers is douchey Chicago rock critic Jim DeRogatis
Benjamin:  !!!!!!!! how do you know that?
Jayson: because I know things, Ben. THings about Jim DeRogatis things that would curdle your soul
Benjamin: seriously? he’s the dude who ryan adams left the voicemail for right? Jayson: I randomly remember the fact that he’s the drummer for that particular Wire cover band, I’m not sure why I don’t actually know anything else of interest about him.
Benjamin: hahah man that’s my longtime fave Wire song

Enjoy.

LOVE, BEST AT ITS SNOTTIEST

DOWNLOAD: Dead Boys, “What Love Is”, from Younger, Louder & Snottier

I’ve spoken before about my band Rottweiler the Best, a part of my life which I’m pretty passionate about, and I’d probably say without reservations that if there was a single band from which we drew a lot of inspiration, it would be the seminal first wave punk band the Dead Boys. From the raw and bombastic hi-energy tunes down even to the five-piece make-up of guit2x, bass, drums, and stupidly hyperactive singer, the Dead Boys have always for me sort of represented the sloppy archetype of punk-garage that I’d ever want my band to be.

In my opinion, their first record Young, Loud and Snotty is one of the best and not-dated sounding records from that time period, and one which I am far more likely to listen to than anything contemporaneous (except Pink FlagThe Clash and The Ramones). But low and behold to me, today I picked up a copy of the later-released Younger, Louder and Snottier, which is basically lo-fi rough mixes of the studio tracks from the album minus Genya Ravan’s studio sheen (which is admittedly more minimal than a lot of late 70s production jobs). Lo and behold, it’s an even better albeit less HQ-sounding version of an already wonderful rock record.

Here’s one of my faves, “What Love Is”, a song that in 2011 sounds almost like a classic rock song than something you might think of as being punk.
